Zelensky Calls Oval Office Meeting ‘Regrettable’: His Commitment to Negotiating Peace

Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently shared that his meeting with US President Donald Trump did not go as planned. He described it as “regrettable” and emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to discuss an end to the ongoing conflict.

Zelensky stated on social media, “I want to say again that Ukraine is committed to peace.” During the meeting, both Trump and Vice President JD Vance expressed their frustration. They accused Zelensky of risking global stability and warned him about the serious situation in Ukraine.

In his post, Zelensky reflected on the meeting, saying, “It did not happen as it should have. I regret how things went. We want future interactions to be constructive.” He acknowledged that “none of us wants an endless war.” Ukraine is ready to negotiate as soon as possible. “The desire for peace is strongest among Ukrainians,” he added, indicating his willingness to work closely with Trump to achieve lasting peace.

This statement might help improve Ukraine’s relationship with the United States, which appears strained after the meeting. Zelensky also mentioned Ukraine’s eagerness to finalize a minerals deal that was originally scheduled for signing during the meeting but was interrupted by the heated discussion.

“We are ready to finalize the agreement on minerals and security anytime. We believe this deal will boost security and provide essential guarantees,” he remarked. Zelensky proposed a practical approach to starting a ceasefire, suggesting steps like a prisoner exchange and a ban on missile strikes targeting civilian areas. “We are willing to act quickly to bring an end to the war,” he said.

His proposed plan echoed an idea shared by French President Emmanuel Macron during a recent summit with Western leaders. Zelensky did not forget to express gratitude towards the US for its support towards Ukraine’s sovereignty, highlighting the significance of military aid, such as Javelins provided by Trump in the past.

The response from Trump regarding Zelensky’s ideas remains uncertain. What is clear is that Kyiv is trying to make sure its voice is heard in shaping the future discussions about the conflict. Meanwhile, Trump has put a hold on US military aid to Ukraine until he sees a commitment from Zelensky to pursue peace talks, bringing additional pressure to the situation.
