Recent talks in Geneva aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the US, Ukraine, and Russia have wrapped up, with officials noting some progress. Despite this, there’s still a wide gap between Moscow and Kyiv on key issues like territorial rights and security guarantees.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed cautious optimism about the discussions but pointed out a significant hurdle: Russia’s insistence on recognition of territories it occupies in eastern Ukraine. This demand raises concerns about granting Moscow legitimacy for actions taken during the conflict.
On social media, former President Donald Trump hinted at positive developments but reminded followers to remain skeptical. Notably, the talks did not include any Russian representatives, leaving Moscow out of the loop. Spokesman Dmitri Peskov indicated that they were aware of some changes to proposals favored by President Putin but noted the Kremlin’s discontent with the overall plan.
A recent 28-point proposal, crafted by US and Russian officials, drew criticism from Ukraine and its European allies. Several aspects appeared to favor Russia’s long-standing positions, which created tension and urgency among European leaders. Trump’s comments about a deadline for Ukraine to accept the deal added to this sense of urgency.
While US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted substantial progress made, there remains skepticism among some European leaders. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted uncertainty about any advancements toward peace, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz referred to the negotiations as a lengthy process without anticipated breakthroughs in the immediate future.
Adding to the complexity, a counter-proposal from Britain, France, and Germany did not recognize occupied territories and allowed Ukraine to expand its military capabilities. However, Rubio claimed he was unaware of this alternative plan, which the Kremlin dismissed as unhelpful.
Since its invasion in 2022, Russia has sought full control over eastern Ukraine, demanding Kyiv withdraw from the Donbas region entirely. Yet, both Ukraine and its allies are wary of any agreements that might compromise their territorial integrity. Zelensky has emphasized that conceding parts of the Donbas could expose Ukraine to further aggression from Russia.
As discussions continue, it’s unclear what the next steps will be. Zelensky is expected to communicate directly with Trump soon, which may influence a future draft peace plan for Moscow. Currently, there are no plans for immediate negotiations between Russian and US officials.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer highlighted that more work is needed for a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. A virtual meeting of allied nations is scheduled to further address developments in the ongoing situation.
The challenges ahead are significant, and the stakes are high for all involved. Recent surveys indicate that public sentiment in Ukraine remains largely against giving up any territory to Russia, reflecting a deep-rooted desire for sovereignty and stability. Maintaining this resolve will be crucial as the diplomatic landscape evolves.
