Ubisoft recently faced backlash from fans of Anno 117: Pax Romana after a loading screen image generated by AI was found in the game. The company admitted it was a placeholder that accidentally slipped through their review process. The game’s Steam page now includes an “AI Generated Content Disclosure,” marking a first for Ubisoft.
Despite this, many fans are dissatisfied. They expect higher quality from a major developer like Ubisoft. The AI-generated image features noticeable flaws such as odd facial features and missing limbs. Even an improved version didn’t win over all critics. One fan remarked, “If they are going to go with cheap tools in their game, I will wait until the game is cheap.” Another expressed deep concern, stating, “I don’t want to live in a future where big studios choose AI over real artists.”
Ubisoft responded to the criticism, clarifying that the image would be replaced in a future update. They stated, “With Anno 117: Pax Romana being our most ambitious Anno yet, we’ve assembled the largest team ever for the franchise.” They use AI tools mainly for iterative design, emphasizing that the final product reflects their team’s artistry.
However, criticism extends beyond just the imagery. Some players are claiming that the game’s text localization appears to be AI-generated, leading to further frustration. One user pointed out that despite receiving substantial sponsorship from the German government, the localization quality seems disrespectful to the German language.
This situation taps into a broader conversation about AI use in creative fields. In recent years, artists and writers have raised alarms about job security as AI technology advances. A survey from the Creative Industry Federation found that over 60% of artists worry about AI tools affecting their livelihoods. While some argue that AI can enhance creativity, many are concerned that reliance on it may diminish the quality of artistic work.
Ubisoft has had its share of challenges since releasing Anno 117: Pax Romana in June 2024, a game designed to transport players back to ancient Rome. As the debate around AI in gaming continues, it highlights the need for developers to engage with their communities thoughtfully.
