The Texas Rangers have put outfielder Wyatt Langford on the 10-day injured list due to a flexor strain. Langford shared this news with the media, noting that it’s a grade 1 strain and he expects a quick recovery. Alejandro Osuna will join the team as he takes Langford’s spot.
Interestingly, flexor strains are more common among pitchers than position players. Langford mentioned he might have sustained the injury while swinging rather than throwing. He has faced some challenges this season, including a small quad strain a couple of weeks ago that didn’t require an IL stint.
So far, Langford’s performance this season has been below expectations with a .238 batting average and a wRC+ of 78. This is a significant drop from his previous two seasons where he posted a .247 average and a wRC+ of 115. A break from play could be exactly what Langford needs to recover and regain his form.
The Rangers have primarily used Langford, Evan Carter, and Brandon Nimmo in the outfield. In Langford’s absence, the team is considering options like Sam Haggerty, Ezequiel Durán, and Andrew McCutchen. Haggerty has struggled this season, boasting a mere .154 batting average. On the other hand, Durán has been impressive, hitting .298 with a strong on-base percentage.
McCutchen, now 39, has mainly played as a designated hitter and hasn’t regularly played the outfield since 2022. While he might provide depth, it’s uncertain whether he will take on a larger role in left field.
Osuna made his MLB debut last year but has seen a slow start in the minors this season. His current numbers in Triple-A show potential, though they’re modest at .262/.355/.354. Given that he’s a lefty, there may be opportunities for the Rangers to use him strategically alongside right-handed hitters like Duran and McCutchen.
In summary, while Langford’s injury poses a challenge, it opens up opportunities for other players to step up. The Rangers will need to rely on their depth to navigate this stretch.
