The San Francisco Giants recently made some notable roster changes. Jerar Encarnacion, an outfielder, has been designated for assignment. Meanwhile, they’ve optioned Will Brennan to Triple-A Sacramento. These moves coincide with the recalls of Bryce Eldridge and Jesús Rodríguez, as well as the recall of right-hander Trevor McDonald. Unfortunately, left-hander Erik Miller has landed on the 15-day injured list due to a low back strain, retroactive to May 1.
Encarnacion joined the Giants on a minor league deal in May 2024 after impressing in the Mexican League. He had a standout performance there, showcasing a .366 batting average and other strong stats over 26 games. In Triple-A, he maintained a .352 average before being promoted to the major leagues in August.
However, his time with the Giants hasn’t been as successful. In 210 plate appearances, Encarnacion has struggled, showing a low walk rate of 3.3% and a high strikeout rate of 27.1%. His batting line stands at .223/.248/.371, a significant drop compared to his minor league and Mexican league numbers, reflecting a 29% dip below league average.
The Giants’ overall offense has been lackluster, and Encarnacion’s struggles are part of a larger trend. Due to this lack of options, he’s caught in the designation for assignment limbo, which could last up to a week as the team explores trade interest.
Given his challenges, it’s likely he might clear waivers, although he has previously shown promise. If he returns to the minors, he could opt for free agency based on his history.
On the pitching side, Miller’s injury leaves the Giants looking for depth in their bullpen. Despite his struggle with walks, his strikeout rate of 35.4% is notable, making his absence a blow. With Miller sidelined, the remaining left-handed options include Matt Gage and Ryan Borucki.
Trevor McDonald is stepping up to start tonight, primarily due to the team’s recent doubleheader. After his start, it’s possible he might return to the minors, further adjusting the roster as needed.
In the grand scheme of things, team dynamics like these highlight how quickly situations can change in sports. Many players face challenges balancing their performance with roster movements, making MLB a dynamic and unpredictable environment.
