As kids return to school in Marietta and Belpre, they’ll benefit from new health services provided by Akron Children’s Hospital. This collaboration aims to make health care more accessible right in the school buildings.
One exciting feature is the School-Based Health Center (SBHC). With a parent’s okay, a nurse practitioner can offer various medical services. Mary Schatz, clinical nurse manager for Akron Children’s, explained that if a child complains of ear pain, the nurse can examine them either in person or via telehealth. If an ear infection is found, the nurse can quickly send a prescription to a pharmacy. This means kids spend less time out of school and parents avoid taking time off work.
Brad Cunningham, senior director of Primary Care and School Health at Akron Children’s, emphasized how effective SBHC has been in keeping kids healthy. It focuses on minor ailments like coughs, colds, and allergies, which can disrupt learning. The program is built on the idea that being healthy is key to doing well in school.
Stacey Greenup, a certified nurse practitioner, will work directly in Marietta and Belpre schools. She’ll be supported by a medical assistant to meet the students’ health needs. Some services include annual check-ups, vision and hearing screenings, as well as vaccinations.
Mental health is also a priority. Students can be screened for anxiety and depression, with referrals available to mental health therapists if needed. This holistic approach fosters both physical and emotional well-being.
Akron Children’s has a track record of success in Ohio, serving 44 school districts. This initiative highlights the importance of school nursing in promoting health and readiness to learn.
