Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, welcomed customers on the first day of sales for the latest Apple products at the Fifth Avenue store in New York on September 20, 2024.
Recently, Apple announced plans to build a new factory for artificial intelligence (AI) servers in Texas. This factory is part of a massive $500 billion investment in the U.S. The company aims to set up a 250,000-square-foot facility in Houston to manufacture servers for Apple Intelligence, the AI assistant used on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Slated to open in 2026, this factory is just one part of Apple’s investment plan over the next four years. Alongside the new facility, Apple plans to create around 20,000 new jobs across the U.S. Most of these roles will focus on research and development, silicon engineering, software development, and AI and machine learning tasks.
Tim Cook expressed confidence in American innovation, stating, “We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we’re proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our country’s future.”
This announcement follows a meeting between Cook and President Donald Trump. Apple faces pressure regarding its manufacturing choices, particularly since most of its products are assembled in China. Recently, Trump imposed new tariffs on Chinese goods, which adds further complexity to Apple’s manufacturing strategy.
Apple’s $500 billion investment includes collaborations with U.S. suppliers and production for its Apple TV+ streaming service across 20 states. The company noted that it has paid over $75 billion in U.S. taxes in the last five years, with $19 billion paid in 2024 alone.
Furthermore, Apple plans to double its Advanced Manufacturing Fund from $5 billion to $10 billion. It will establish a manufacturing academy in Michigan and increase its research and development spending within the U.S. to advance fields like silicon engineering.
