Collaboration Ahead of COP30: Iraq’s Foreign and Environment Ministries Unite for Climate Action

The Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Multilateral Affairs, Mr. Shorsh Khaled Saeed, met with Mr. Jassim Al Falahi, the Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, on March 10, 2025. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s headquarters and included Dr. Fadhel Al Rahim, the head of the International Organizations and Conferences Department.

They discussed Iraq’s upcoming participation in the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30). This important event is set to happen in Brazil at the end of the year, with preparatory meetings scheduled in Bonn, Germany, this summer.

This meeting is particularly significant as Iraq will hold the presidency of the G-77 and China negotiating group at COP30. This group includes 134 countries and is the largest negotiating coalition in the United Nations, representing various interests and positions.

At the end of their discussion, both parties emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between the Foreign Ministry and the Environment Ministry. This coordination is essential to develop a strong diplomatic, political, and technical stance to support Iraq’s interests and goals during these negotiations.
