The Indian Railways is set to introduce its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express in time for Diwali 2025. This new service will connect Delhi and Patna via Prayagraj, according to a report from CNBC TV18.
This premium overnight train will significantly reduce travel time to just 11.5 hours, compared to the usual 12–17 hours it currently takes. For reference, the Rajdhani Express takes around 23 hours on the same route.
What sets this sleeper train apart is its design for long-distance night travel. Built with advanced technology from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the train can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h. Passengers can expect a comfortable journey with features like CCTV cameras, LED information displays, sensor-based doors, and modern fire safety systems.
According to the proposed schedule, the train will depart Patna at 8 PM and arrive in Delhi by 7:30 AM. The return trip follows a similar timetable. Fares are expected to be 10–15% higher than the Rajdhani Express, but officials believe the speed and added amenities make it worthwhile. Compared to flights, this service also offers a more budget-friendly option.
Since launching in 2019, the Vande Bharat series has become a key part of the Indian Railways, operating on seven routes. The addition of the sleeper train aims to improve long-distance travel and reduce congestion, especially during festive seasons. This corridor is one of the busiest in India, and the new service will enhance business and tourism connections across North India.
For more insights, it’s worth noting that user reactions on social media have been largely positive. Many are excited about the increased comfort and speed. The launch reflects a growing trend in public transport, focusing on modernizing and improving service quality.
This move is also important in the context of India’s ongoing rail modernization efforts, aiming to upgrade infrastructure and enhance passenger experiences. With this in mind, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is not just a service; it’s part of a larger vision for the future of travel in India.
