At a time when Cuba is facing its toughest economic crisis in years, Sandro Castro, Fidel Castro’s grandson, is under fire for flaunting his lavish lifestyle on Instagram.
Sandro, 33, has more than 120,000 followers. He often shares videos of himself driving luxury cars around Havana, partying on yachts with expensive drinks, and hosting swanky gatherings at his exclusive club, EFE Bar. Recently, he posted a video seemingly mocking the frequent power outages that leave Havana residents in the dark for as long as 20 hours a day. In another clip, he referred to Cristal beer as “medication that must never be missing from his bar.” He also urged then-President Donald Trump to help Cuban migrants during a time when many are leaving the island.
Growing up in Havana’s elite neighborhood of Punto Cero, Sandro’s upbringing starkly contrasts the struggles faced by ordinary Cubans. His father, Alexis Castro Soto del Valle, is one of Fidel Castro’s sons. The former leader championed austerity, yet Sandro’s display of wealth raises eyebrows amid the current climate.
According to the Daily Mail, he frequently visits El Patrón, a countryside resort costing around $100 a night—far more than the average monthly salary of just $16.50 for most Cubans.
Today, Cuba grapples with severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine. A recent Reuters report revealed that the nation’s foreign currency revenue has dropped by 30% in recent years, leading to rampant inflation. Given this backdrop, Sandro’s opulent parties, where entry can reach 1,000 Cuban Pesos and table reservations soar to 15,000 CUP, have drawn outrage from citizens struggling to get by.
Sandro has stirred controversy before. In 2021, a video of him inside a luxury Mercedes-Benz went viral during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting backlash. He later claimed that the car belonged to a friend, insisting he was just “testing it out.”
As Cubans queue for basic necessities, Sandro’s social media presence highlights glaring inequalities and the disconnect between wealth and reality. His life of luxury raises unsettling questions about privilege and the legacy of his grandfather’s revolution.
