Join the Fight Against Hunger: Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Launches 2025 Annual School Food Drive

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank has kicked off its annual school food drive, which runs until March 21. This year, the drive is reaching out to schools in the Shenandoah Valley to tackle the serious issue of food insecurity.

Livia Marrs, the food bank’s volunteer and food drive manager, highlights the importance of this campaign. “Food insecurity isn’t just a problem during the holidays; it’s a year-round challenge,” she explains. Engaging students in this drive helps not only to gather food but also to spread awareness and inspire community participation.

During the holiday season, donations often spike, but they usually decline in winter and early spring. Rising costs for everyday items make this drop in contributions even more concerning. That’s why large-scale food drives like this one are crucial for supporting families in need.

This year, 30 schools are participating in the effort. These include schools from Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Crozet, Staunton, Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg, with 11 schools from the Shenandoah Valley. Students and teachers are central to its success, as they rally their communities to get involved. “Their hard work mobilizes families and raises awareness,” Marrs adds, expressing gratitude for their dedication.

While students collect food donations from their schools, the community is also invited to help. For the first time, a virtual fundraiser is available. This allows anyone to donate money online to support the food drive. Every bit helps feed local families who are struggling.
