ROCKFORD, Ill. – A special event took place recently, combining a town hall meeting with a youth art auction to support a local food pantry. This gathering, organized by the DHARMA Foundation, was held at the Crusader Clinic.
The highlight was artwork created by students from Rock House Kids. All funds raised from the auction went directly to the Broadway Food Pantry.
Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara and 11th Ward Alderman Jaime Salgado led the town hall discussion. “I’m really excited our kids can help raise money for the local pantry,” shared Dee Lacny, Executive Director of Rock House Kids. “The community gives so much to Rock House Kids, and it’s nice for us to give back.”
This event was the culmination of a four-month effort showcasing student artwork in various locations. In December and January, their pieces were displayed in local businesses along the Broadway Corridor and the Midtown District. In February, the collection was featured at Rockford City Hall.
Rock House Kids plays an important role in the community. They provide free programs, mentoring, hot meals, and essential supplies to over 250 youth in inner-city Rockford.
Community involvement in events like these highlights the power of collective action. According to a recent survey by the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD), volunteer activities can significantly strengthen community ties. By participating in such events, residents can connect, share ideas, and encourage one another.
