On August 25, 2025, Hightstown, New Jersey, received a significant food donation. Almost 30,000 pounds of food came from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, destined for Rise, a local nonprofit that serves the community. This food will help stock Rise’s pantry and support its mobile markets and home delivery programs, benefiting over 700 families each week.
Leslie Koppel, executive director of Rise, expressed gratitude for this timely support. She noted that food security is a pressing issue for many families. “Thanks to this partnership, we can provide nourishment and hope. When communities unite, no one has to go hungry,” she said.
Rise has a long-standing relationship with local Latter-day Saint leaders, spanning over 16 years. In 2024, they collaborated to distribute 900 turkeys to families during Thanksgiving. Additionally, each Wednesday, 15 missionaries volunteer at Rise to help with grocery distribution.
The bishops’ storehouse, which is managed mainly by volunteers, supplies food and household items. These goods come from the Church’s farms and processing facilities. Local bishops recommend assistance for those in need, while any surplus is shared with community organizations or during emergencies.
Juan Cobos, operations coordinator at Rise, emphasized that this delivery means more than just food. “These items help us ensure that no one goes hungry,” he stated. In 2024, Rise distributed over 145,000 bags of groceries and supported thousands through various services, including seasonal resources like backpacks and holiday gifts.
This outpouring of support is crucial, especially as statistics show rising food insecurity across the nation. A recent USDA report noted that nearly 10% of households faced food insecurity in 2023, a stark reminder of the importance of community efforts.
President Dirk Lindeman of the East Brunswick New Jersey Stake acknowledged the importance of this partnership, stating, “We are thankful for this opportunity to provide much-needed food and supplies to NJ Rise.”
The ongoing dedication from both organizations highlights the power of collaboration in serving those in need. Together, Rise and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are proving that united efforts can make a meaningful impact.
