EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State hockey team, currently ranked No. 3, celebrated some big wins recently. On Wednesday, the Big Ten Conference awarded three top honors to the Spartans. Senior defenseman Matt Basgall was named Defensive Player of the Year, junior goaltender Trey Augustine snagged Goaltender of the Year, and Head Coach Adam Nightingale was recognized as Coach of the Year. In addition, five Spartans secured spots on the All-Big Ten teams.
Basgall had a standout season, being the second Spartan ever to earn the Defensive Player of the Year title. He’d been a finalist for the award before, but this is his first win. He was also a First Team All-Big Ten selection for the second year in a row. With 18 points and a strong defensive record—only taking two penalties—he helped his team significantly.
Augustine’s achievement as Goaltender of the Year marks him as only the second player in Big Ten history to win this title in consecutive years. He led the conference with 23 wins, an impressive goals against average of 2.08, and a save percentage of .929.
Nightingale, now a two-time Coach of the Year, has led Michigan State to their third consecutive Big Ten regular season championship. Under his guidance, the Spartans produced the top power play and penalty kill units in the conference. They finished the regular season with a record of 25-7-2, racking up 51 points.
Among the players, freshman Porter Martone had a remarkable season. He was the only freshman selected for the All-Big Ten First Team and topped the conference with 20 goals during Big Ten play. This accomplishment puts him in an exclusive club, only joining a few others who have reached that milestone as freshmen.
Senior forward Charlie Stramel also had an exceptional season, leading the nation with seven game-winning goals. He nearly doubled his career points total, finishing with 44 points across 35 games.
Senior Daniel Russell excelled as well, leading his team in assists and finishing strong in both points and assists for the first time in his career.
The recognition of these athletes underscores a successful season for Michigan State hockey. Their achievements not only highlight individual talent but also reflect the strength of the team as they prepare for the NCAA tournament.
