The Oregon National Guard joined forces with various military branches for a lively celebration at the University of Oregon’s annual Spring Football game on April 25, 2026. This event brought the community together to honor military members, veterans, and their families connected to Oregon.
Under sunny skies, fans mingled with service members, eagerly anticipating the upcoming NCAA football season. As the teams competed, heartfelt tributes were shared, paying respect to those who have served our nation and community.
Before kickoff, service members, veterans, families, and first responders presented a massive American flag on the field. Oregon Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Ben Pasi sang the National Anthem, while two F-15 Eagles from the Oregon Air National Guard soared above, delighting over 35,000 cheering fans.
Brig. Gen. Alan R. Gronewold, The Adjutant General of the Oregon National Guard, performed the ceremonial “Coin Flip” to kick off the game officially.
Throughout the day, military families and local veterans were recognized for their contributions. At halftime, new recruits and service members extending their commitments took the Oath of Enlistment, led by Gronewold. The event concluded with a post-game T-shirt exchange between service members and the football team. The “Combat Team” bested the “Fighting Team” 17-10.
This celebration isn’t just about football; it reflects growing public support for military families. Recent surveys show that 78% of Americans believe military service should be recognized more actively in communities. Such events help bridge the gap between civilians and service members, fostering understanding and appreciation.
As Brig. Gen. Gronewold put it, “Each hand we shake, each flag we raise, brings us closer together.” Celebrations like these not only honor those in uniform but also strengthen the ties within our community.
