Microsoft has announced that it will stop supporting the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store on May 27, 2023. It will be replaced by the new Windows App.
After May 27, 2023, the Remote Desktop app will no longer connect to services like Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box. To find out about known issues during the transition, Microsoft suggests checking their Known issues and limitations of the Windows App.
The Windows App is meant for work and school accounts. It allows users to connect to various services including Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and Remote Desktop Services. This app can be used on PCs, tablets, smartphones, and through web browsers.
In 2023, the Windows App was in preview and officially launched in September 2024. Microsoft emphasized that it serves as “a unified gateway to Windows.”
However, it’s important to note that this new app currently lacks support for Remote Desktop Services and Remote PC connections on Windows, even though it works on platforms like macOS, iOS, Android, Chrome OS, and Meta Quest.
Due to this limitation, Microsoft recommends that users of the Remote Desktop app switch to the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app on Windows for remote desktop access.
To connect to a remote PC using Remote Desktop Connection, simply search for it in the Start Menu. Click on it, enter the name of the PC you want to connect to, and hit “Connect.”
