In Cheyenne, Wyoming, the Cheyenne-Laramie County Health Department checks on various places that serve food, like restaurants, bars, and grocery stores. Each establishment is inspected at least twice a year without prior notice.
The health department finds two main types of violations during these inspections: “red critical violations” and “black violations.” Critical violations are serious—they can lead to foodborne illnesses. On the other hand, non-critical violations tend to relate to cleanliness or maintenance.
The goal of the health department is to help businesses fix these issues. If a critical violation is found, it’s usually corrected right away or within a day. For non-critical violations, the establishments are still required to make fixes, but a follow-up may wait until the next routine check.
If a re-inspection is necessary, it might indicate a significant problem, and the establishment will have ten days to resolve the issue.
While inspections focus on identifying problems, the health department aims to educate businesses about unsafe practices to help them improve. So, just because a place has no violations doesn’t always mean it’s safe.
For more details about each inspection, including any serious issues, summaries can be found on the health department’s website.
