The first Performing Arts Festival in Vernon was a vibrant celebration filled with talent and energy. Over four days, hundreds of dancers took to the stage, showcasing their skills in front of enthusiastic audiences.
From March 2-5, nearly 600 entries from dance studios in Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton, Salmon Arm, and Kamloops participated at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre. Dancers eagerly performed for two adjudicators who provided valuable feedback, tips, and awards. The event also offered hundreds of dollars in scholarships to promising participants.
A heartfelt message from the festival organizers thanked everyone involved: dancers, parents, teachers, volunteers, and technical staff. “It takes a village,” they said, acknowledging the collective effort that made the festival a success. The organizers were thrilled to see artists from across the Okanagan come together, inspiring one another and creating a supportive community.
The Vernon Performing Arts Festival Society was established to offer young talent a platform to shine and receive input from experienced artists. One such adjudicator was Georgina Moore, a talented dance educator and choreographer from Edmonton. With over 15 years of experience, Moore has taught at many respected studios and universities in Canada and the U.S. She has also served as an adjudicator for various international dance competitions. Her passion for teaching aims to foster a love of dance and guide students who aspire to pursue a professional career.
The Society believes in the importance of such festivals for students. “Skills gained from participating in a performing arts festival can be life-changing,” they noted. These experiences help build confidence, improve presentation skills, and teach the valuable lessons of accepting corrections and learning from mistakes.
Looking ahead, the Vernon Performing Arts Festival will continue with its Music Syllabus this spring at Peace Lutheran Church and the Performing Arts Centre. This upcoming event will feature performances in various categories including strings from April 26-28, voice from April 29 to May 1, piano from May 2-6, and a gala concert on May 16.
