On Tuesday, a tragic shooting occurred at Kentucky State University, resulting in the death of one student and serious injuries to another. The university’s president, Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the event as a “senseless tragedy.”
During a press briefing, Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy confirmed that three individuals were involved. A suspect, who is not a student, has been arrested. The other two individuals involved are KSU students. Police assure the community that this seems to be an isolated incident with no ongoing safety threat on campus.
Governor Andy Beshear shared his condolences, stating, “Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country.” He praised the prompt response from law enforcement and called for prayers for those affected.
The Frankfort Police Department responded quickly to reports of an “active aggressor” around 3:35 p.m., securing the campus alongside KSU Campus Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Kentucky State University, a historically Black institution, has a student body of about 2,200. It was established in 1886, about two miles from the state Capitol. This community-oriented university plays a crucial role in providing education and support to its students, particularly during difficult times like these.
