Mike Afolarin is quickly becoming one of Nollywood’s brightest stars. He’s not just known for his compelling acting; he’s also stepping into photography. In a recent chat, he shared insights about his life, career, and thoughts on Nollywood’s future.
TheCable Lifestyle: When did you realize you wanted to act?
Mike: It all started with school plays. That experience made me realize acting was my path. I’ve been committed ever since.
TheCable Lifestyle: Who inspires you in the industry?
Mike: Gabriel Afolayan really stood out to me, especially with his intense performances. I learned a lot from watching him.
TheCable Lifestyle: What’s the hardest part of being an actor?
Mike: The long hours. Sometimes you’re on set for 24 hours straight. You must bring energy to your performance, no matter how tired you are.
TheCable Lifestyle: You also take photos. What’s your process like?
Mike: I started taking pictures because I wanted to capture the style I like. My background in acting gives me an eye for photography, and I keep it simple and relaxed.
TheCable Lifestyle: What would you be doing if not acting or photography?
Mike: That’s a tough question! I’m interested in media and fashion, so I’d likely explore those areas.
TheCable Lifestyle: How did you feel about ‘Freedom Way’ when you first read the script?
Mike: I felt it was incredibly relatable. The themes echo the daily lives of many Nigerians, especially the youth. It really struck a chord with me.
TheCable Lifestyle: How did you connect with your character?
Mike: The struggles depicted in the film reflect my own experiences and those of people around me. It was easy to tap into that reality.
TheCable Lifestyle: What do you hope audiences take away from ‘Freedom Way’?
Mike: The film showcases how the system impacts Nigerians. I want viewers to see our resilience and understand that we can navigate these challenges together.
TheCable Lifestyle: Why does Nollywood still have struggles despite being a major export?
Mike: Many filmmakers see only Nigeria as their market. If we aimed for a wider audience, we could elevate Nollywood’s reputation globally. We need to think beyond just local audiences.
The rise of YouTube films has stirred debate about whether they help or hurt the industry. Mike believes that while they broaden access, many lack quality. He emphasizes that filmmakers should focus on the long-term impact of their work, not just immediate profits.
TheCable Lifestyle: What do you think about allegations of misconduct in the industry?
Mike: I’ve personally never experienced any such issues. However, I respect the stories of those who have.
TheCable Lifestyle: With rising popularity, are you in a relationship?
Mike: Yes, I’m in a relationship, but that doesn’t change my professional focus.
TheCable Lifestyle: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Mike: I envision stepping behind the camera to focus on movie production. I want to create stories that resonate long after I’m gone.
Today, social media is buzzing with Mike’s growing fanbase, especially among young women. This reflects a larger trend where actors connect more intimately with fans via platforms like Instagram. With Nollywood on the rise, the future looks bright for talents like Mike, who are reshaping the industry one story at a time.
