Researchers have discovered a surprising number of hydrogen gas halos around galaxies, bringing new insights into the early universe. A recent study reveals over 33,000 of these halos, a significant jump from the previous count of about 3,000. This expansion gives scientists a deeper understanding of how galaxies formed billions of years ago.

During the “cosmic noon,” around 10 to 12 billion years ago, galaxies were forming stars at their highest rates. To do this, they needed a lot of hydrogen gas. This gas is crucial for star formation, yet it’s challenging to detect because it doesn’t emit light by itself. Usually, scientists find hydrogen near bright galaxies, where ultraviolet light makes the gas glow.

Finding these faint signals requires advanced technology and lengthy observations. As a result, only the most prominent halos have been detected until now. The latest research utilized the Hobby-Eberly Telescope in Texas, collecting almost half a petabyte of data on galaxies and their surroundings.

The newly discovered halos vary widely in size, from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of light-years across. Some are simple, football-shaped clouds, while others resemble large, irregular structures that can include multiple galaxies. Erin Mentuch Cooper, a lead researcher, described some of these shapes as “giant amoebas,” with tendrils extending into space.

This groundbreaking analysis provides researchers with a more complete dataset to explore. As Dustin Davis, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, noted, this new data allows for a closer look at individual halos. Understanding these structures may help address gaps in current models of galaxy formation.

Recent statistics underscore the importance of this work. Studies show that 95% of the universe’s mass remains undetectable. Understanding hydrogen’s role could change our view of what we think we know about the cosmos.
