In the face of this news, TikTok announced it will “go dark” for its 170 million American users. However, those outside the U.S. will still have access to the platform. Many users are posting memes and farewell messages, finding humor in the situation, while companies join in with their own creative tributes.

Sony Pictures didn’t hold back, sharing a classic clip from “The Social Network.” The video shows a character’s dramatic reaction to betrayal, with the caption, “all of us this week.” Fandango added to the laughter with a scene from “Titanic,” depicting a band continuing to play amid chaos.

Max, the platform formerly known as HBO Max, got in on the fun, sharing a “Game of Thrones” clip that shows a character waiting for an unfortunate fate, captioned, “everyone awaiting TikTok’s fate on the 19th.” Other companies have also hopped on the trend, with Sony sharing a clip from “Spider-Man,” where a character laments about sacrifice, reflecting the feelings of social media managers facing this potential loss.

Even brands like Duolingo and PopTarts shared farewell videos, featuring Green Day’s song, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” Windows jumped in as well, saying, “We’re not really going anywhere tho. Catch us on Reels and Shorts :P.”

Businesses have been preparing for this moment for a while, shifting marketing strategies to platforms like Instagram and YouTube. With the looming ban, TikTok expressed that it would stop functioning in the U.S. unless the Biden administration intervenes. However, the administration stated that it would leave it to the incoming President-elect to address the situation.

The president-elect indicated he might grant TikTok a 90-day extension, allowing it to find a non-Chinese buyer. This decision is still pending, but it gives some hope to those invested in TikTok’s continued operation.
