US actor and filmmaker Woody Allen has shared a heartfelt tribute to Diane Keaton, who passed away at 79. In a piece for The Free Press, Allen called her “unlike anyone the planet has experienced,” remarking that her presence lit up any room.

Allen remembered meeting Keaton in 1969 during rehearsals for his play, Play It Again, Sam. Their collaboration led to eight films together, including the iconic Annie Hall, where Keaton’s performance earned her an Oscar in 1977. Allen reflected, “I made movies for an audience of one, Diane Keaton,” and admitted he never cared for reviews—only her opinion mattered.

In Annie Hall, Keaton portrayed a quirky and free-spirited character that captured hearts, especially that of Alvy Singer, played by Allen. They even had a real-life romance. Allen famously compared her to “Huckleberry Finn as a gorgeous young woman.”

He noted the world feels “drearier” without Keaton, yet her films continue to resonate with audiences. “Her great laugh still echoes in my head,” he said. Keaton’s talent shone in other Allen films like Manhattan, Sleeper, and Radio Days.
