Discovered in 1963 during construction in Villena, this hoard consists of 66 exquisite items, mainly gold and silver, but two peculiar iron pieces have puzzled experts for years. What sets the Treasure of Villena apart is its unusual iron. Unlike typical iron tools found in later periods, these pieces are polished and incredibly resistant to rust. For a long time, archaeologists classified them as rare examples of early ironwork without knowing their origin. But recent research revealed something intriguing: at least two objects were made from meteoritic iron, linking them to materials from outer space.

Led by Salvador Rovira-Llorens from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, a team analyzed the iron’s chemical composition. Using advanced techniques, they discovered the presence of nickel, a signature of meteoritic iron. This finding places the Treasure of Villena alongside famous artifacts like Tutankhamun’s dagger, showcasing how ancient cultures valued cosmic materials.

The hoard, weighing almost 10 kilos of precious metal, includes jewelry, decorative vessels, and the two iron pieces. Experts believe these objects represent some of the earliest uses of meteoritic iron in the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to a time when iron was still scarce. Such unique craftsmanship speaks to the sophistication of Bronze Age metallurgy, demonstrating that artisans had access to remarkable materials.

Visitors to the Archaeological Museum “José María Soler” in Villena can see how these items were carefully crafted. The surfaces of the bracelet and hemisphere gleam as if they were made yesterday. Their corrosion-resistant nature has allowed them to survive through millennia, standing out even among the more numerous gold pieces.
