Google has unveiled an exciting camera feature for Pixel users. With the new update, you can now connect an external camera wirelessly, allowing you to capture video from different angles. This can be done without needing third-party apps, setting it apart from competitors like the iPhone.

The feature, known as Connected Cameras, is part of Google’s March Pixel Feature Drop. It enhances the camera capabilities for Pixel devices starting from the Pixel 6 and newer models.

With Connected Cameras, owners of the Pixel 9 series can connect their devices wirelessly to an external camera, allowing them to stream video from different angles directly to platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.

This feature allows seamless switching between the main and external cameras while recording. It also captures audio from the currently active camera, simplifying the video creation process.

March 8 Update: The Connected Cameras feature is now available for Pixel 9 series users. Here’s how to set it up.

To get started, open the Pixel Tips app and look for the “Use another Pixel’s camera” option. This will guide you through the steps to connect your second Pixel device as a remote camera. If you prefer to use a GoPro, you can find setup instructions by swiping right.

If you prefer, you can access the feature through your Pixel’s settings by searching for “connected.” This will lead you to the new Connected Cameras page. Simply toggle the switch to activate it.

Once the feature is active, you can open your preferred streaming app to utilize Connected Cameras. Currently, it supports platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube. If it’s not showing up, ensure your Pixel is updated and that you have the necessary apps from the Google Play Store.

You can connect a Pixel 6 or newer device or a GoPro Hero 10 and newer as a remote camera. Multiple remote cameras can be linked, but only one can stream at a time. This is a limitation to consider, but it offers a chance to utilize an old Pixel device effectively.

How to Enable Connected Cameras on the Google Pixel 9 Series

To enable Connected Cameras, go to the Connected Devices section in your smartphone’s settings. When available, a new option will appear there.

Once active, a camera picker will show up during video streaming with compatible apps. This makes it easy to switch between cameras while you stream.

Your main device must be a Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, or Pixel 9 Pro Fold to use the Connected Cameras feature.

Potential Limitations of Google Pixel’s Connected Cameras

One limitation is that both devices need to be signed in with the same Google Account to use Connected Cameras. This means you can’t easily borrow a friend’s Pixel for remote use.

Another concern is the automatic audio switching to the active camera. While it’s handy, there may be moments when you want to keep the audio from the main device while viewing the remote camera, such as when doing a voiceover while changing views.

Switching between cameras isn’t instant; there’s a countdown displayed. This may affect the ability to make quick transitions, such as switching between your face and a close-up of an item you’re showcasing.

There’s also a chance for misuse. Remote cameras can lead to unauthorized recording or streaming without someone’s consent, which raises privacy concerns.

The Pixel Drop from March 2025 is now rolling out, but availability might vary by region.
