Gavaskar Challenges BCCI: Critiques Rohit Sharma’s Actions in Australia and Urges Ajit Agarkar to Respect India’s Cap Distribution

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has urged the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to reduce the size of the Test squad for the upcoming series in England this June. With the World Test Championship cycle starting anew, Gavaskar believes it’s important to build a focused and cohesive team.

Gavaskar recently voiced his concerns about the Indian team’s performance during the Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia. He was critical of the decision to travel without captain Rohit Sharma, who missed the opening match due to the birth of his second child. Missing a captain sent a weak message, he argued, suggesting it reflected poorly on team leadership.

“The team should arrive in England as one strong unit, not in separate groups. When we arrived in Australia without our captain, vice-captain, and coach, we sent a message of vulnerability. This can impact morale and performance,” Gavaskar expressed in his column for Sportstar.

Looking back at the Australia tour, Gavaskar noted that while Rohit rejoined the team for the second Test, his performance was lackluster, scoring just 31 runs in five innings. His absence in the initial match, however, loomed large. Gavaskar emphasized the need for strong leadership from the start to instill confidence in the team.

As for the squad for England, Gavaskar pointed out that a large number of players can indicate uncertainty. He understood the necessity of a bigger squad during the challenging Australia series but insisted that in England, the focus should be sharp. “The weather can change quickly, but having too many players might suggest indecision among selectors,” he explained. “The India cap is special and should not be handed out lightly.”

In conclusion, Gavaskar is advocating for a more streamlined approach as the Indian team prepares for a significant series. Building a cohesive group with clear leadership could enhance their chances of success on the international stage.
