Recent research from security experts Michael Bargury and Tamir Ishay Sharbat, presented at the Black Hat conference, shows a critical vulnerability in how these connections work. They demonstrated a method called “AgentFlayer” that can extract sensitive information from Google Drive using an indirect prompt injection attack. This means a hacker could get access to essential data, like API keys, without any action from the user.
Bargury explains that the attack doesn’t require user intervention. “We just need your email, share a document with you, and that’s it,” he said. This highlights how linking AI with external systems can create opportunities for malicious hackers.
OpenAI has acknowledged the potential for misuse. The company launched its Connectors feature earlier this year, allowing connections to at least 17 services. They positioned it as a way to enhance functionality: users can search files and access live data directly in their chats.
Though OpenAI implemented some measures to mitigate this vulnerability after being alerted, the attack method still poses a risk. According to Andy Wen from Google Workspace, while this issue is not solely related to Google, it underscores the importance of developing strong defenses against such prompt injection attacks. Google has recently enhanced its AI security measures to counteract these threats.
