The Trump administration’s sudden decision to cut $400 million in federal funding from Columbia University has raised concerns at other institutions. At least nine campuses, including notable public and Ivy League schools, now feel threatened by the possibility of similar actions.

These universities were named in a report from the Department of Justice, which claims they may not have adequately protected Jewish students and faculty. However, faculty members from these schools have strongly defended their institutions, noting that most protests have been peaceful. They point out that many of the demonstrators were Jewish themselves, highlighting the complexity of these discussions.
Targeting higher education has become a key focus for the Trump administration. The President publicly announced on social media that he would take action against any school that allows what he describes as “illegal” protests. Just ten days into his term, he signed an executive order aimed at addressing antisemitism, especially at what he labeled “leftist” colleges. Alongside that, he initiated a multi-agency task force to enforce these goals.
The task force quickly went into action after a pro-Palestinian sit-in at Barnard College, a partner to Columbia, on February 26. Just days later, the administration released a list of ten schools under review, including Columbia, which had seen significant pro-Palestinian demonstrations the previous year. The administration planned site visits to assess whether these schools needed to take corrective measures. Following this, they announced the cancellation of millions of dollars in grants and contracts with Columbia.
This situation raises important questions about freedom of speech on college campuses and how institutions can balance a diversity of opinions while ensuring a safe environment for all students. As controversies continue, the dialogue around campus activism, funding, and institutional responsibility remains critical and ongoing.
